CBAM Calculator: Calculate Your Carbon Border Obligations for Concrete

CBAM Calculator: Cement from China

Emissions Breakdown (tCO2 per tonne cement):

Clinker Emissions:
0.420
Process Emissions:
0.020
Electricity Emissions:
0.058
Total Embedded Emissions:
0.498

Key assumptions:

  • Standard clinker emission factor: 0.525 tCO2/t clinker
  • China grid emission factor: 0.581 tCO2/MWh
  • Additional cement process emissions: 0.02 tCO2/t cement

These calculations are indicative. Official compliance reporting requires production-specific emissions data and detailed tracking methodologies.

EU CBAM: From January 2026, importers need CBAM certificates based on verified embedded emissions (Commission Implementing Regulation EU 2023/1773).

UK CBAM: Starting January 2027, similar requirements will apply for UK imports.

Decerna provides compliant emissions calculations, quarterly reporting support, and training for both EU and UK CBAM requirements.

Understanding CBAM: Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism Calculator

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is an EU climate measure designed to put a fair price on the carbon emitted during the production of carbon-intensive goods entering the EU. This helps create a level playing field between EU producers and imports from countries with less stringent environmental policies.

Why Do We Need CBAM?

As the EU strengthens its climate action through the European Green Deal, there’s a risk that carbon-intensive production might shift to countries with lower environmental standards – a phenomenon known as “carbon leakage”. CBAM helps prevent this by ensuring that imported goods face carbon costs equivalent to what EU producers pay under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

About This Calculator

This interactive tool demonstrates how CBAM calculations work for cement imports from China. It takes into account:

  • Direct emissions from clinker production (the main component of cement)
  • Process emissions from cement manufacturing
  • Indirect emissions from electricity consumption

Use the sliders to explore how different factors affect the total embedded emissions and, consequently, the CBAM obligations. The calculator provides a simplified version of the actual CBAM calculations to help understand the basic principles.
