This was tricky to write. We’re a consultancy, and we know EPD that our costs vary hugely depending on product complexity and supply chain. But it’s also one of the most searched questions, and businesses need budget figures to plan.
This page is market averages, not our specific prices. We quote based on product complexity and factory location; we always do site visits, which affects cost. But to give you realistic benchmarks, which everyone needs, here’s what actual market data shows.
The Denmark Study (2024)
Shobatake et al. (2024) analysed construction product EPDs from Denmark’s subsidy scheme – covering insulation, windows, concrete, steel, and general building materials. All EPDs had to follow EN 15804+A2, and applicants had to report exact costs to claim the subsidy. This makes the data unusually reliable.
Here’s what they found:
EPD Creation/Consultancy: £19,550 median
(Range: £15,350 – £26,500)
EPD Verification: £2,330 median
(Range: £1,600 – £2,880)
Verification typically runs around 12% of consultancy costs.
What these figures exclude
Internal data collection time. You’ll spend significant resource gathering manufacturing data, supply chain information, and site measurements. The numbers above are purely what you pay external consultants and verifiers.
Also worth noting; Denmark’s subsidy conditions may have pushed costs slightly higher than typical market rates. And verification costs in the UK tend to run a bit above what Denmark reported.
We’ve seen consultancies charging far more than these figures. If you get a quote significantly higher, ask why; though genuinely complex products with messy supply chains can legitimately cost more.
Programme Operator Fees
On top of consultant and verifier costs, you’ll pay the EPD programme operator. Here’s EPD International’s current structure:
Registration (one-time per EPD)
- 1st EPD: €1,000
- 2nd-4th: €500 each
- 5th-99th: €500 each
- 100th+: €50 each
Annual Fees
- Micro (1-10 employees): €500
- SME (11-250): €1,000
- Large (250+): €2,500
- Industry Associations: €1,000
One EPD can cover multiple product variants if their emissions differ by less than 10%, which helps spread costs.
Why This Matters
The Denmark researchers compared their 2023 data against a 2014 global survey. Result? No significant cost reduction over the past decade. EPD creation still takes similar effort.
That’s important because EPD requirements are expanding rapidly – CBAM, Battery Regulation, Construction Products Regulation. For products with low sales volumes, these costs become a serious budget consideration. As the study notes, streamlining will be essential.
About Decerna’s Approach
These market figures give you a benchmark. Our actual quotes depend on your product complexity, supply chain transparency, and factory locations; site visits are mandatory in our process. A straightforward single-site product costs less than a complex multi-component assembly with international suppliers.
