BringAbout is Decerna’s carbon reporting platform, built to help UK businesses navigate the path to Net Zero. The name comes from a sailing term for changing direction, reflecting what we are trying to do with carbon emissions. Decerna started life beside the former shipbuilding docks in Blyth as a spin-out from the UK National Renewable Energy Centre, and that heritage runs through everything we do.

What is BringAbout?
BringAbout is Decerna’s carbon reporting platform that allows businesses to set a base year, calculate their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, and set near-term and long-term science-based targets. Reports can be downloaded and shared publicly. The tool generates Carbon Reduction Plans compliant with PPN 006 (06/21) and SECR reports that meet UK Government reporting requirements.
What is the difference between Basic and Premium?
BringAbout Basic is entirely free and covers Scope 1 and 2 emissions calculation, which is enough for many businesses starting out. Premium (£900 per year) adds Scope 3, Carbon Reduction Plan generation, SECR reporting, accounting software sync, team collaboration, and bespoke emissions categories. Premium Supported (£1,650 per year) adds a dedicated consultant alongside you throughout.
What emission factor sources does BringAbout use?
Emission factors are drawn from Government Conversion Factors for Greenhouse Gas Reporting, DESNZ Conversion Factors by SIC code, and the Exiobase database. The calculation methodology is aligned with the GHG Protocol.
What does the name BringAbout mean?
BringAbout is a sailing term for changing direction, representing the change we want to bring about in carbon emissions. It also connects to Decerna’s history: the company started life beside the former shipbuilding docks in Blyth, as a spin-out from the National Renewable Energy Centre.

Carbon and sustainability terminology can be confusing. Here are the terms you will encounter most often when using BringAbout.
Scope 1 Emissions
Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, such as combustion in boilers or company vehicles.
Scope 2 Emissions
Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, heat, or steam.
Scope 3 Emissions
Indirect emissions from sources not owned or controlled by the organisation, including supply chain, business travel, and employee commuting.
Carbon Reduction Plan
A strategic document outlining specific actions to reduce carbon emissions. Required for UK public sector procurement under PPN 006.
SECR
Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting. A UK Government requirement for large companies to disclose energy use and carbon emissions in their annual reports.
GHG Protocol
The world’s most widely used framework for measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions, which BringAbout is aligned with.
CO2e
Carbon dioxide equivalent. A standard unit for measuring carbon footprints, converting different greenhouse gases to their CO2 warming effect over 100 years.
Net Zero
Achieving a balance between the greenhouse gases put into the atmosphere and those removed, through emission reductions and carbon offsetting.
Science-Based Targets
Emission reduction targets set in line with the Paris Agreement’s climate science, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Carbon Footprint
The total greenhouse gases emitted directly or indirectly by an individual, organisation, event, or product, expressed in equivalent tonnes of CO2.
Embodied Carbon
Carbon emissions associated with the production of materials and products, particularly relevant in construction and manufacturing.
CBAM
